Malvern Director of Rugby Andy Longley announced that back row forward Owen Jones had returned to Spring Lane after a season in National Two with Broadstreet. “Owen was highly influential in our promotion season two years ago and in our first year back at this level, so it was no surprise when he was given an opportunity to play at a higher level. However, he has decided to return to us for this year and will also be assisting with coaching our Under 16 age group players. This is very much in line with our policy of growth from within, and many other players in the squad will be encouraged to give input to the Youth section.”
Longley also professed himself delighted with the way that pre-season coaching under Mike Ruddock was progressing. “We have had a really good turnout for the twice weekly sessions that Mike has taken. The players find them exhilarating and are happy with the variety and scope of training. A great knock-on effect is that we have seen many players turning up and wanting to play at Malvern, as they can see that we plan to grow as a club. On Tuesday we had our Under 17 group training with the senior squad as part of our programme to help the transition from youth to adult rugby and I was delighted with the commitment and enthusiasm shown by the youngsters.” Training takes place at Spring Lane on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 7.00pm, details on the website www.malvernrfc.co.uk
As well as retaining the core squad from last season, Longley expects to be making some more significant signings in the weeks to come as the new term draws nearer. Warm-up matches have been arranged at home to Old Halesonians on 21st August and away to National Three South West outfit Newton Abbott on 28th August before the league season kicks off at home to Burton on 4th September.
